In Australia, there is an increasing number of babies and children sustaining injuries from falling out of cots and beds. This is due to not recognising the right time to transition child from cot to a bed.
It is important to note that the safest place for a baby to sleep is a cot that complies with Australian standards and Red Nose Guidelines with safe sleeping. When it is observed that a child is attempting to climb out of cot and is likely to succeed, it is time to move out of the cot. This usually occurs when your toddler is 2- 3 and a half years but could occur as early as 18months.
Choosing your child’s next step depends on personal choice. Two low risk options include using a floor mattress or a toddler bed. Adult height beds can be used but are of a high risk. Be mindful of the following:
Keep area around bed free of furniture/toys and soft flooring used to minimise injury. No spaces or gaps of more than 95mm. Attach a portable bed rail to prevent falling with pillows/toys/soft bedding kept away from the railing to prevent suffocation.
