For babies and toddlers to have healthy development it is important that they receive a nutrient rich diet. Nutrients are vital in the growth of your child.
Up until 6 months of age, breastmilk or formula has all the nutrients babies need to develop. From 6 months babies and toddlers require different nutrients such as fibre, vitamins and minerals that are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, meats and dairy.
Nutrient deficiencies may occur in children who do not eat a balanced diet. Some common problems include:
*Too much cows milk: Toddlers who drink more than 500ml in 24hours can become low in iron and fibre as it can inhibit the aborsption of iron from food.
*Consuming low amounts to no fruit or vegetables: Fibre keeps the digestive and immune systems healthy. Low fibre diets can cause constipation as well as has an effect on your child’s body ability to fight off infections
*Poor food choices: Products marked as ‘low fat’, ‘no added sugar’ or ‘containing fruit’ are foods that are low in nutritional value and should be given sparingly. When reading labels of products the fewer ingredients the better.
Key points to remember: A nutrient rich diet is important for healthy growth and development. Generally most vitamin deficiencies can be managed at home with minor changes to diet.
You should take your child to a GP if you are unsure about your child’s weight or diet if you are concerned they may have a allergy to particular foods.
